This paper presents a general vision of the reasons to evolve the mobile communications systems toward fourth generation (4G). Firstly, common aspects for this technology and the different approaches followed around the world are described. Then a reference guide of the technological advances impelled by 4G is given. Finally, the reference model for the applications that will be developed over this new system is described.
