Resumen:

Scenarios of fixed mobile convergence services basedon the combination of wireless and cellular networks through theuse of multimode terminals, require the use of suitable handovertechniques to maintain the communication quality, especially inreal-time conversational services. Two types of handover couldtake place: horizontal handover between wireless Access Points, and vertical handover between the wireless network and thecellular network. The latter is considered to take place when nohorizontal handover is possible. Since common wireless userterminals implement horizontal handover as break before make,it is necessary to reduce the total amount of unnecessaryhandovers, while keeping the signal strength above the systemsensitivity threshold. Several handover techniques are analyzedand simulated, and a method to assess the effect of the horizontalhandover on the conversational quality is illustrated using ascenario simulation.
